Carlos Gardel was born Charles Romuald Gardés on 11 December 1890, in Toulouse, France. Son of an unknown father, he arrived at Buenos Aires with his mother at the age of 2.
He lived great part of his life in Abasto neighbourhood. His childhood was a modest one and as a kid he would work to help his mother.
He started to sing at the age of 17 and in 1911 he formed a duo with an Uruguayan singer named José Razzano, who turned him into the phenomenon of the decade.
The recognition came in 1914, when he started to present himself regularly in a Buenos Aires cabaret called Arnemonville.
After the separation of the duo, he started to travel abroad. In 1925 he was already very popular in all Hispanic America. 1927 was the year of his glory in Europe, reaching great success in Paris. Then the United States and the movies came.
